About Us
OUR HISTORY
Metairie Humane was founded by Harold (President) and Joan (Treasurer) Delahoussaye out of a concern that the local public shelters were not providing adoptable pets an adequate chance at finding a new forever family before pets were euthanized. Shelter space is shared with Pampered Pets Bed and Breakfast at 6213 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70003. Day to day operations is now run by Jami Hirstius (Vice President).
WHO WE ARE:
- NO KILL - Dogs not adopted remain with us with dignity and love until their natural death
- SHELTER - We provide the following until pets are adopted:
- Housing in a safe and loving environment (fosters are not used)
- Food, treats and toys
- Medical care & immunizations
- Attempt to rehabilitate and provide remedial training to dogs that lack the social skills for successful adoptions
- Monthly Heartworm & Flea Prevention
- Microchip
- Spay/Neuter before adoption, if old enough
- Small to Medium Dogs - Due to space limitations, we specialize in dogs under 26 lbs & puppies of larger breeds
- IRS approved 501(c)3 Non-Profit Charity

Connecting humans with pet companions destined to be a lifetime love affair.
OUR GOALS:
- Provide a safe and loving environment for pets awaiting placement in loving homes
- Help our dogs to become adoptable pets
- Find safe and loving families to adopt our dogs and cats that will end in a lifetime love affair
- Educate people on:
- Responsible and caring pet ownership, and
- Benefits of spay/neuter to reduce animal over population
